INDONESIA - Intercontinental Bandung; a luxury with a panoramic view

My Indonesian road trip together with my daughter on Java and Bali had a four night stop in Bandung. It’s a city with lots of colonial history with nature around. It’s climate is cool and pleasant year round due to its location. The city is busy, but not as bad as Jakarta, so I looked for a hotel away from the busy parts. I saw that the Intercontinental Bandung had awesome views over Bandung. It was an easy decision to stay there and I don’t regret it. Let me take you around the hotel and I’m sure you agree with me it’s a perfect luxury hotel in Bandung. But first, let’s start with a short video impression.

The hotel

The Intercontinental Bandung is located on a hill in the north of Bandung. Just 30 minutes from the airport or in rush hour maybe an hour. I arrived from Jakarta in the late afternoon. The staff greeted me by name when I arrived. I was the only foreigner staying at that moment so it was easy to recognize me 🙂 It was throughout my stay that I was greeted by name. When I entered the lobby my eye fell immediate on the awesome view over Bandung. The walls overlooking the valley are made from floor to ceiling glass. Panoramic views I can guarantee you. The hotel is a beautiful designed hotel; both inside and outside. Various colors of grey, metal and glass make up the facade. The lower floors up to the 6th house various common areas.  A total of 7 floors make up the guest rooms and the 18th floor are three “blocks” that are put on top (see photo) for the restaurant and club lounge. Lots of day light enters the hotel in the common areas due to the outer walls mostly being made of glass. I appreciate this and together with the view it gives the feeling being one with Bandung and its mountains.

The rooms at Intercontinental Bandung

My room 1001 was a panoramic corner room. It had windows almost covering two sides from floor to ceiling. To wake up in this room was magnificent. At dawn the sunrays would shine through the windows on the bed. I would wake up and see the haze in the valley disappear by the sunlight before heading to breakfast. The view over Bandung is amazing with the volcanos in the back. It’s a large room with a couch going “out” of the room which gives a beautiful panoramic view. A very comfortable bed where I would have loved to sleep longer but there was too much to see around Bandung so I had to get up early. The bathroom is large with free-standing bathtub overlooking the city. A rainforest shower is present. I love those. The room has all the amenities one would expect including a well-stocked mini bar. It included traditional Dutch “stroopwafels”. A memory from Dutch colonial times. Welcome fruit, pastries and a bottle of wine was waiting for me including a personalized welcome card. I love being a Royal Ambassador at IHG Rewards Club. I suggest everyone to join. There are also bungalows in case you would like to have a bit more room, a balcony and more privacy. I really felt at home at the Intercontinental Bandung.

Facilities at Intercontinental Bandung

The Intercontinental Bandung has a wide range of facilities. There is a 18 hole golf course next to the hotel. On the 5th floor is the gym and SPA which I didn’t try this time as I had no time. The infinity pool offers stunning views over Bandung. It’s a heated pool as Bandung sometimes can get chilly. The friendly concierge can give you advice on what to see and do in and around Bandung. Make sure you visit the Putih crater with its white blue lake. We did three day tours around Bandung which I will share with you later. On the departure day the hotel arranged the shuttle to the airport. A day is easily spend just at the hotel without going out into the city or mountains.

Dining & Drinking at Intercontinental Bandung

The Intercontinental Bandung has two restaurants and a lobby bar. At the 18th floor I had dinner on the arrival night. It’s a Chinese restaurant and I was positive surprised by the prices of the dishes. Very affordable. The quality and taste were outstanding. Like in China which I can reckon as I did a dozen or so trips there. My daughter enjoyed the meal too. We had jellyfish, fish lips soup, scallops, beef and beans. Simply delicious. The second night we had dinner at the Indonesian/Western restaurant next to the lobby. The food was of very high quality and we enjoyed our dinner with a night view over Bandung. After dinner I just enjoyed the view for an hour while sipping on a cold Bintang beer. After good night sleep I woke up naturally by the sunlight and this made me hungry. Time for breakfast. The selection at breakfast is very large including a noodle and egg station. I took the same each day 🙂 Some fresh rolls with cold cuts, a spicy noodle soup, a double espresso and of course two eggs sunny side up. The second day the staff already knew what I wanted and the espresso came automatically. I did take the suggestion of the staff to try the fresh juices. I loved the bright pink orange and dragon fruit mix juice. As the hotel is on the outskirts of Bandung I was afraid prices would be steep at the restaurants. On the contrary, it was very affordable. In case you would like something else there is an Italian restaurant nearby but it’s more expensive and offers less quality. We tried it one night but was not special. Altogether we had some delicious dining experiences.

Conclusion

If you are planning a trip to Bandung, Indonesia, then I recommend staying at the Intercontinental Bandung. The rooms are comfortable and large. Make sure you take a valley view room. The views are amazing over Bandung while having a delicious breakfast or dinner.  You won’t get bored either with the pool, gym, SPA or the 18 hole golf course. I highly suggest including Bandung in an itinerary on Java. It’s an interesting city with lots of things to do. I enjoyed my stay and will choose the Intercontinental Bandung again if I return.
