LAOS - Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum Hotel: now a luxury retreat, once a royal mansion

Laos has been on the top of my bucket list for a long time. In April 2016 I finally had the option to visit Laos after a conference in Singapore. The Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum Hotel was my home for two nights in Luang Prabang. It’s a luxury hotel and part of the Angsana Hotels which is owned by the Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts Group. I had a great time at this mansion and I will share with you my experience. I’m sure you will want to visit too if you are in Laos! Enjoy.

The hotel

The Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum Hotel is located in the former residence of Prince Souvanna Phouma. You sleep in a royal mansion, that’s unique! It consists of two buildings. One only houses guest rooms. The other has on the main floor the lobby and restaurant with on the 2nd floor more bigger rooms. There is a large lush green garden around the mansion. The two buildings are built in traditional French colonial style with Laotian details everywhere. It’s as if you are back in time here except that you will find all modern luxury at the mansion, including fast WiFi. When I arrived at the airport the staff was already waiting for me. They were very friendly and assisted me to quickly buy a local SIM card. It is just a 15 minute to the hotel. Downtown Luang Prabang (main street) can be reached in just a few minutes by foot. Check-in was very quick and efficient by the friendly staff. I was personally escorted to the room where the staff explained all the features. I liked this colonial style luxury hotel. I was pampered like a real prince.

The rooms at Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum

My room was located on the second floor with a view on the main building and pool. When I first entered I noticed the “welcome home” on the bed made from banana leaves and flowers. The room is large and has, like all rooms, its own private balcony. Along the wall opposite the bed are a desk and a royal stocked minibar from which nonalcoholic beverages are free of charge. The bed is large and comfortable. Neither hard nor soft. Just good. The bathroom is not the biggest in the world but it does have a rainforest shower and that’s something I like. The decorations throughout the room are traditional Laotian styled. Altogether a beautiful room to feel at home and escape the heat in the good working air-conditioning.

Facilities at Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum

The Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum Hotel has a beautiful SPA in the garden with three treatment rooms each in a separate small house. Everywhere there are lots of flowers which make the place romantic. The pool is located next to the restaurant in the garden. It’s long enough to actually do some swimming. When I was in Laos temperatures where ranging from 36 to 40 degrees. A pool is a must to cool down to survive the heat. I just took my notebook to the pool to write this review and do some other work. I could really relax in this peaceful garden.

Dining & Drinking at Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum

The Angsana Maison Souvannahphoum Hotel has one restaurant and a pool bar. At the pool bar there is a happy hour in the afternoon. The first night I had dinner at the restaurant. I enjoyed a 10 course Laos Prince tasting dinner at the restaurant. This is something you must try. It’s delicious. The wine I ordered by the glass to have both white and red but the wine list is very extensive. With top quality wines from around the world.

In the morning breakfast is served at the same restaurant. One morning it was a buffet sand the other morning a la carte. I think due to the occupancy of the hotel as it’s a small hotel. I do not have a preference. The a la carte breakfast included everything that was also on the buffet with the advantage I didn’t need to get it myself. The quality and service of both breakfast and dinner is outstanding. I had some delicious meals.
